PROTECTION OF TURTLE EGGS

WHAT WE DO

Turtle egg trade and poaching are one of the main threats of the sea turtle population in Kudat. To combat these threats we empowered the local community to be trained as Honorary Wildlife Wardens and Honorary Park Rangers. We believe that by establishing this program, more people, particularly locals, will be encouraged to safeguard the turtles, their eggs and habitats.

TURTLE HATCHERY

A hatchery for sea turtles is only needed in the case where they need to be translocated to a safer area until hatching. KTCS set up hatcheries at Bavang Jamal and Simpang Mengayau for this purpose. So far since 2011 the recorded turtle hatchlings released into the sea at Bavang Jamal and Simpang Mengayau were approximately 3000 hatchlings.
