MONITORING
Various monitoring programs were conducted as an effort to observe any changes in the marine environment, hoping to identify the cause of the changes and devise a solution. With the collaboration from higher learning institutes, together we built the capacity of the local communities to carry out data collection and monitoring activities on the field through citizen science projects. Our monitoring programs mainly focus on the sea turtles nesting and foraging ground, i.e. the beach, seagrass beds and coral reefs.
CAPACITY BUILDING
KTCS capacity building activities include workshops, skill enhancement trainings, learning by doing and study visits. These activities targeted for the Park Wardens, Honorary Wildlife Wardens and the members who are currently working on conservation project in their area.
CITIZEN SCIENCE
Citizen science is carried out to collect baseline information on sea turtles and their foraging habitat, the seagrass in Tun Mustapha Park (TMP), on the north coast of Kudat, using scientific procedures supervised and coordinated by UMS. The project is designed specifically for the local communities in Bavang Jamal, Simpang Mengayau as well as the Tour Operators in an effort to encourage community participations in conserving Kudat’s turtle populations. This project offers them the scientific knowledge on sea turtles and seagrass while equipping them with the necessary skills.
